Do you feel awesome or what?

My 8 year old daughter dashed into the house with great excitement, in hand a one page colored glossy from school. Tomorrow is earth hour daddy, look, look, we get to shut the lights down and save the planet. Yay.

It did work on my daughter i admit, and on many of you. Twitter is a buzz with #earthhour this, and #earthhour that. People sat in the dark, can you believe that. For one hour, many gave up the privilege of electricity and joined many 3rd world countries who dont have it. I grew up in one of them, there was no earth hour, there was earthmonth, no power, no heat, nothing.

Now, lets take Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, last year for earth hour, a great success story. All in, we saved 4% of our consumption, the equivilant of, are you ready….. 1 house off the grid for 4 years. A lot of brew ha ha over nothing, more power was wasted on printing my daughters earth hour ads than what was saved. The amount of energy spent making this happen was more than what was saved, worse yet, in ottawa, over 2000 homes where built this year, we need to sit in the dark for a month to make up the difference.

So, if you participated in earth hour, I really hope you feal awesome, now we can all go back to our wasteful ways.

Congrats

Twitter #followfriday – Lets make a deal

It was a great idea in the beginning, let your followers know about good people to follow on twitter. I admit such a referral system is much needed especially since every day i get a new follower who has 5000 followers 5000 people they are following and 10 tweets, not gonna follow you back,  sorry, don’t care how great you look.

Problem is, people are too excited and have taken this too far, Friday now is a sea of blue @a @b @c …. #followfriday. I  am starting to get annoyed. #FollowFriday and twitter feels like a flee market, with people screaming Hey there, look over here, i got such a great deal for you. Hey Hey, check this out, so and so is #followfriday worthy. As if twitter needs more noise.

So Twitter, can you please create some referal/rating system, its bady needed.

Twitter users, lets make a deal. Please only follow people who truly are follow worthy. If you do that, we dont need a #followfriday. This way I will know that all the people you are following are good. If you dont think someone is worthy of your followfriday tweet, then drop them and that includes me. Lets just end this madness.

So there you go, your guilt free pass to unfollow me, clean up twitter, and make friday a #tweetfriendlyfriday

Go Fans Go

Moxies is a trendy restaurant in Kanata a suburb of Ottawa, better know for its great atmosphere, beautiful waitresses, and awesome bar, the food not that important (but edible). Moxies is also where some Ottawa Senators Players and fans bump shoulders once in a while.

Feb 28th, saw the Ottawa Senators losing to the hated Tornoto Maple leafs, A loss that seems to infuriate the Sens Army and send them into a tail spin. The Ontario rivarly has gone on for years now, with the exception that this year, both teams are hopeless. In any case I was at the game, and this game was like no other. The Leafs won and it was a fair win, and their fans who must have out numbered the Sens army (in Ottawa) where having a lot of fun. Good for you Toronto, 40 years without a win and the fans are still true fans, maybe the leafs are hated simply because they just have true fans.

Moxies is not far from the arena, problem is, well as you expect, it takes time to get out of the parking lot, so the 5 minute trip, took us 30 minutes, and since we decided to go grab a drink and are heading there after the game, we thought that we should listen to “The Team 1200” an am dial radio station that gets several calls from sports experts of all kinds after every game. The fans where pissed off. Fire the GM, we need a new goaly, trade Spezza, etc…. Anger and devastation.

We get to Moxies, and upon arrival there is a buzz, why? a Senators player is in the crowed with adoring fans asking for autographs. WHAT? how did he get there so fast, looking so nice and dressed? Does he not have to shower, cool down, listen to the coach complain? Nope, with a beer in his hand and a circle of fans, life at Moxies was not even remotely close to what was being said on the radio, you would think Ottawa just won the Stanley Cup

Being a fan aint easy, if your a leaf fan, its been more than 40 years with no satisfaction. Oh how easy do fans forgive and forget that the same people who caused a cancelled season a few years ago, again drive ferrari’s and have a good time 30 minutes after a loss.

Are you a fan of a sport? Do you forgive and forget? If you dont set a standard or at least expectations for the player and the team, how could you expect them to get better?

There will be no pub crawling, beer drinking soccer player in Brazil after a loss to Argentina, I guarantee it.
